These awards recognize a diverse group of talented GW faculty who have shown extraordinary dedication to teaching, scholarship, and service to the university. Through our faculty, the heart of our university, we are educating students to be engaged citizens and leaders in their fields. Congratulations!



Trachtenberg Prizes (Teaching, Service, and Research)

President Emeritus Stephen Joel Trachtenberg established these faculty awards in memory of his parents in the early 1990s.

Jason Zara, Associate Professor, Biomedical Engineering, SEAS
Oscar and Shoshana Trachtenberg Prize for Teaching Excellence
This award honors outstanding undergraduate teaching and is presented annually to a tenured faculty member.

Professor Jason Zara has worked for 19 years in the development of novel imaging instrumentation and software to approach the detection and evaluation of epithelial cancers, epilepsy, and other human diseases. In 2006, Professor Zara received the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation Early Career Translational Research Award for his work in microfabricated OCT scanners. He holds seven U.S. patents and previously founded two start-up companies, including a GW spin-off, Lumacoustic Systems, LLC.

 

Forrest Maltzman

Forrest Maltzman, Professor, Political Science, CCAS
Oscar and Shoshana Trachtenberg Prize for Service
This award is presented annually to a tenured faculty member to recognize exceptional service to GW, especially service that is voluntary and university-wide.

The institutions of American national government serve as the focus of Professor Maltzman's teaching and research, and he is especially interested in the factors that shape decision-making within Congress and the Supreme Court. His current research centers on enriching our understanding of how and when legal doctrines guide judicial decision-making. In addition to teaching, Dr. Maltzman is also Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and Planning.

This award is presented annually to a tenured member of the faculty that has made significant original contributions to research and/or creative endeavors.

Professor Binder's work focuses on the politics of legislative institutions, including their origins, development and impact on legislative policy outcomes. Professor Binder's most recent work examines the ways in politics and economics intersect to shape the governance of and decision making by the Federal Reserve.
