Faculty Awards

The call for nominations begins October 9th for all the awards listed below. All nominations must be submitted via the Faculty Affairs website by November 24th, and supporting materials sent to Faculty Affairs (for the Trachtenberg Prize for Teaching Excellence, Bender Award and Amsterdam Award) by January 26th.

Winners of the Trachtenberg Prize for Teaching Excellence and the Bender Teaching Award will be inducted into the GW Academy of Distinguished Teachers. 

Awards

Oscar and Shoshana Trachtenberg Prize for Teaching Excellence

  • Faculty members must be nominated by an undergraduate student for this award.
  • GW award for a tenured member of the faculty who regularly teaches undergraduate students.
  • The faculty member's nomination must be supported by his or her department.

Oscar and Shoshana Trachtenberg Service Prize

  • This award is presented annually to a tenured member of the faculty to recognize exceptional service to GW. 
  • Emphasis will be put on service that is voluntary, above and beyond the usual or require faculty service, and on service that is university-wide

Oscar and Shoshana Trachtenberg Prize for Faculty Scholarship (Research)

  • This award is presented annually to a tenured member of the faculty that has made significant original contributions to research and/or creative endeavors.
  • The purpose of the award is to recognize outstanding research accomplishments while they are being made rather than years afterward.

Bender Teaching Award

  • Both Full- and Part-Time Faculty are eligible for the Bender Teaching Awards. Faculty members may be nominated by a department chair, colleague, or student, or faculty members can nominate themselves.
  • The faculty member has to have taught for at least two consecutive years at GW to be eligible.

Philip J. Amsterdam Graduate Teaching Award

  • This award is given to GW Graduate Assistants who have had at least three semesters of GA experience. The committee considers evaluations from students and supervising professors, as well as the quality of the GA’s academic work.
